BBC iPlayer - a retrospective

February 23rd 2009

Yet again Fjord's efforts bore fruit at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona when the BBC iPlayer service won Best Mobile Music or Video Service.

For my part, certainly, the award marks a defining moment in our continued relationship with the BBC that dates back to the service's inception in early 2006. At that time our mission was purely to elevate the notion of a cross platform TV offering within the Beeb's complex hierarchy. Such was the brand guardians' trepidation that programmes such as EastEnders, Top Gear et al would inevitably compete in a world where channel brands were becoming less significant, Fjord's role was very much of the guiding, handholding variety.

So, having defined the vision, Fjord undertook the task of crafting the mobile experience. By then Yahoo Go! was under our belts and fresh in our minds so many of the same team began to cook up how best Aunty's rich content should be consumed quickly and easily. Over six months the product took shape with many ideas infusing the iPhone flavour of the service - and with very few deviations from the original vision, no less! In time the full scope of the offering will reach the masses and today, I'm glad to say, we continue to supply our expertise as iPlayer takes the online community by storm.
