The first time around, downloadable mobile apps were hard to develop, distribute and reach a significant audience. But all of that has changed now if you want to reach iPhone and Android users.
On a global scale the reach of these devices is still very limited. As of October 31, Apple shipped nearly 7M iPhone 3Gs. The numbers are less clear for the first Android phone, T-Mobile's G1, which maybe broke 1M pre-orders. So it's important to remember that if you want to reach the mass market, the mobile web is still the way to go.
