Disruption by competitor can be very dangerous to a business. It can also be equally dangerous if a business itself ends up causing disruption that robs the company all of its profits. But in capable hands, disrupting your own business can mean strong long-term profit, growth and even result in a lead position over the competitors that they find hard to catch up.

Why does pencil on paper make a deeper connection? This Easter, I was reminded just how much we’ve come to rely on the digital services at our fingertips and how much we’re missing if we’re not creating real things too.

Mobile phones used to be all about connecting with people. The address book was at the very heart of the devices, and phones were mainly used for calling and texting. I'm just back from a two-week holiday and am not only lamenting the end of glorious Australian sunshine but also the subsequent dip in my NikeFuel count. The drop in the score I'm clocking up on my Fuelband doesn't take a data analyst to understand. I've gone from daily morning runs followed by a full schedule of keeping a two year old entertained, to a more sedentary office-bound routine topped up with as much exercise as can be squeezed in.

A recent School of Life event at Conway Hall, saw Richard Sennett talking to Alice Rawsthorn about his new book - Together: The Rituals, Pleasures and Politics of Co-operation. The book acted as an anchor for the meandering topics discussed over the next 90 minutes, during which time Sennett, quizzed by Rawsthorn, made the argument for cooperation and against solidarity.

This year’s show promised a ‘new mobile horizon’ and with a reported 72,000+ attendees and an exhibition space of more than 1 million square meters, it is clear that mobile is the future. With many companies exhibiting there for the first time – Ford and Go Pro being notable examples – and a shift towards service-led offerings, the show could soon easily be renamed the Digital World Congress.

This year's show promised us a new mobile horizon and whether it’s the buzz around Mozilla’s Firefox OS, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 or Ericsson’s web communication demo, they all point to a shift that we’re calling ‘the new complexity’.

Way back in 2011 Fjord participated in an EU contest along with a consortium of other organisations to win a project around Smart Materials related to healthcare, we entitled the project Light Touch Matters. Smart materials are substances which when you apply pressure create a small electrical current. By combining this with OLED display technology we are able create an almost limitless range of new applications for information display, learning, safety, healthcare, entertainment and advertising.

We recently took on the question "What role does data play in service design?". Many parts to the answer are already embedded in our work, such as success measures, service metrics and analytics as well as some KPIs, but felt it was worth asking the question again.
