Globo

From desktop to pocket: Mobilizing television content to millions

A Brazilian media giant

Globo is the world’s second largest television network and they are a significant presence in the lives of hundreds of millions of people in Brazil and the rest of the Portuguese and Spanish speaking world.

We began working with them in 2011 to help create a series of mobile portals that would house the wealth of content they create, from current affairs to entertainment and from sport to technology news.

While they have a very strong web presence with quite amazing numbers, 250 million page views per month, their mobile offering wasn’t packing the same punch and it did not reflect the Globo digital brand DNA.

A seamless transition to mobile web

An early in the process decision was made to go the mobile web route rather than the app route, as this would make the portals available to a much larger audience share of the Brazilian market.

Over the last two years, we have taken Globo’s branding and design language from the desktop to the pocket and created a simple and elegant mobile web service that showcases Globo’s huge range of content in a highly accessible format.

The challenge was to make something that remained true to the Globo digital brand, creating a seamless transition from web to mobile whilst introducing mobile specific design qualities that take advantage of the latest developments in browser technology.

Great attention to detail was required from Fjord to ensure that the experience scaled beautifully between different devices and screen resolutions without using responsive design. This was a tactical decision because of the unreliability of mobile broadband in Brazil, responsive design would have impaired the experience for people in places with sub standard 3G coverage.

Great design pays off!

Since launch, the Globo mobile portal has shot to the top of the mobile web rankings only exceeded by Google and Facebook in the Brazilian market. It gets an average of 10 million unique users per month and 245 million page views. These numbers are especially impressive when you consider they represent a third of people who have access to the mobile web. We also know from the metrics that a large proportion of users visit it every day. It really has become a habitual destination for millions of people in a remarkably short time. Visit the mobile site here.

The success has been recognized with the Tela Viva Móvel 2013 Award, one of the premier awards for mobile and tablet content projects in Brazil. A panel of expert judges selected the Globo mobile project as the most outstanding in the “Photo, TV and video” category.

We are still working with Globo, watch this space for exciting developments in the multiscreen television space, an area Fjord has been pioneering for so many clients around the world.
